Many College Professors lack Decency when it comes to our Soldiers.

Several weeks ago, I met a young man, who had recently returned from Iraq.  He was a bartender at a local restaurant, friendly, and quite talkative.  I thanked him for his service as a marine, and he proudly told me that it was an honor to serve this great country.  After some time, he explained that he was attending the local university, working many long hours both at school and in his job.  He was definately the sort of young man, you would want to in line to protect you!  Beyond his "soldier" strength, he was smart, and very polite.  Thus, our conversation continued and we discussed his coursework at the university.  He was eager to get an education but he was disgruntled with some professors.  When I asked him what the issue was, he went on to explain the situations which he had been confronted with.  Apparently there are professors, who have no problem, even in the classroom room, spewing out their hateful rhetoric against our military and war.  Apparently, they think so little of the great men and women who serve this nation, that they make outright condescending remarks about our soldiers.  This former marine was quite shocked by their lack of decency toward him.  Of course, I wasn't surprised.  Most college professors who sit in their sheltered enclaves, lean left.  But what they don't understand as they stand atop their podiums, pondering life, opining their views, and probably not teaching what they ought to be teaching....is that they can FREELY do so because of the American soldiers, past and present, who sacrifice their lives for this country.  It is a shame that their intelligent brains, couldn't tell their loud mouths to be respectful of those who have earned that right!  Integrity, honor, and manners can go a really long way, especially to those who are most deserving of that credit!

It is important to keep in mind that opposing the war, or war in general, is entirely different than opposing the military. The soldier does not have a say in what war he/she wages. I am proud and thankful for American soldiers, and am humbled to have many as close friends. Their williness to sacrifice their life for a cause is laudable. However, this is a seperate issue than the political reasons that a war is waged.

  2. Regardless of whether or not you politically oppose the war, professors should not make negative statements about our men and women in uniform in the classroom. Period! Maintaining class, in the classroom would go a long way!

  3. My thoughts lean to the degree that a professor or any teacher should heed to the classroom agenda regardless of any personal opinions. They should state the facts and take into consideration that doing otherwise may be biased. Should a professor be inclined to have an open classroom debate on a subject, let it be amongst the students. As for the claim that many professors speak openly in the classroom against war and our men an women in uniform seems to be an opinion and needs facts to be supported. This could be an isolated case,or it may not be.

  4. Sentrawoods....I totally agree with your point! Teachers, professors, and Students Aides are there to educate kids in science, math, english....etc.... An open classroom debate is fair game, and students will likely opine freely. And they should! Funny, this was an isolated incident, until the man sitting next to us, also an ex marine felt similar feelings while he attended college after his service. I know that there are great teachers out there who do their job well and for purpose. But, I wrote this blog today for this young man, as I promised I would. Still, I could write for hours about college professors who do not stick to their classroom itinerary. I do have facts, based on the hundreds of college students I know. University teachers are quite able to speak freely about their feelings, even if it doesn't belong within the four walls. However, dismissing the military, in my opinion, is WRONG...and quite franky, they ought to be fired!

  5. Pam,
Teachers at the college level teach more than just facts and figures, they teach about life. Not always by design but some teacher give the best lessons just by showing their prejudices and how they display them in public. Life is not fair and there are those people who hate you for what you believe. Most liberals, professor and others in general, would howl at being called prejudice. They never understand how to frame an argument without demanding that their and only their opinion be the one supported. Without allowing for any other position or fact, and their true hated of all that is different from them, is a classic definition of prejudice. They might as well join the KKK now because it is all the same. Think my way or else!
You are correct that this type of discrimination has been practice for a long time. While at college in the early eighties, I was ordered not to wear my Army uniform, as per my ROTC contract, while in certain classes. It had been well established that some professors and priest would fail you for being in the ROTC program. I spent many a good night having true discussion with some priest who did not support my desire to serve my country but did not discriminate against me. Others did and I learned a life lesson. There are jerks in the world just work around them or you might become like them.
